Roller Garage Doors
Roller garage doors are a classic example of a straightforward mechanism that’s easy to understand and operate. They’re often found in commercial settings but are equally at home in residential properties.
How they operate
Roller doors are made with slat sections that roll around a drum above the door opening, without swinging out. They are usually automated to make them more efficient.
Benefits and Drawbacks
- Roller doors are the most compact type of garage doors as they fold away into almost nothing, great for limited ceiling space
- If a slat becomes damaged it can be replaced without having to overhaul the entire door
- They require enough headroom to accommodate the curtain roll
- They can take longer to open than some other mechanisms

Sectional Garage Doors
Growing more and more popular in recent years, sectional garage doors are similar to rollers as they are flexible and roll up to the ceiling, but they have larger panels. They are versatile enough to be available in a variety of colours and designs.
How they operate
They work by rolling up towards and across the ceiling, meaning that they don’t swing out.
Benefits and Drawbacks
- Saves space in the garage so you don’t need to leave much room for your car or belongings
- Extremely secure due to having very few points that can be broken into
- They require ceiling space inside the garage in order for the horizontal runners to operate

Side-hinged Garage Doors
The side-hinged garage door is a traditional design that has recently been revived and is available in more contemporary styles, with various colours and materials. They provide easy access, especially convenient for those who don’t use their garage to store a car.
How they operate
They work with a simple swinging door mechanism, opening from the side, as their name suggests, rather than the floor. They can often be produced as a 50/50 or 70/30 split depending on your access needs.
Benefits and Drawbacks
- You can rest assured that they are incredibly safe and secure
- Great for garages that are used for alternative purposes e.g. storeroom, office, gym
- Not the best option for those who store their car in the garage as access is less convenient

Up & Over Garage Doors
This is the most popular type of garage door. Rather than being made in sections or two separate pieces, the up-and-over is formed of one solid block.
How they operate
Up-and-over canopy doors have a pivoting hinge mechanism so they can tilt up and sit parallel to the top of the garage. Up-and-over retractable doors are similar, but lift up and into the garage so they don’t protrude past the opening.
Benefits and Drawbacks
- Canopy up-and-overs are quick and easy to install, and provide full drive-through width
- Retractable up-and-overs can cope with heavy door panels and are easily automated
- Canopy up-and-overs are more difficult to automate
- Retractable up-and-overs can reduce the width of the opening
