How to Stop a Draught Coming Through My Garage Door

During the colder, windier months of the year, you might start to notice that your garage door is letting in a draught – especially if you have an up and over garage door. An up and over garage door will need gaps around the edges as it needs room to move during operation, thus allowing cold air in around the edges.

How to stop daught from my garage door

This cold air does two things. For one, it makes your garage cold and uninhabitable, meaning you often won’t want to venture in even to grab something quickly. Secondly, it will present an area of heat loss from your home. This heat loss will mean higher energy bills and, possibly, a colder house if your heating system isn’t able to cope.

To help you learn how to stop a garage draught, we’ve put together a series of recommendations.

Garage Door Seals

If you have an up and over garage door and you really want to keep it but stop the draughts, look towards garage door seals. The first version of this is homemade, using foam tubing which you place on the bottom lip of your garage door, creating a blocker while it’s closed. Alternatively, you can buy specially designed strips which you can install along the floor where the bottom of the door rests to block the gap – these are also good for keeping water out of your garage door.

Replacing Your Garage Door

If a weather strip simply isn’t doing the trick, or your garage door is old and you don’t want to go through the hassle of wrestling with DIY, why not consider replacing your garage door?

Replacing your garage door

There are two garage door styles which are great for keeping a draught out of your garage space:

Roller Garage Doors

Roller garage doors do not have to allow for as much wiggle room as other doors since it is a singular door being rolled up into a vertical opening. This door type has no gaps along the side or the bottom since it sits in a frame, eliminating the opportunity for draughts. Add to this the ability to insulate the door itself and you’ve got a draught-free zone with minimal heat loss.

Sectional

Similarly, sectional garage doors also make a great option if you’re looking to eliminate a draught in your garage. Much like the roller door style, this door retracts vertically into the ceiling space of your garage so it sits in a gliding system at both sides without any gaps. The sections create a rigid wall when lowered, but separate as they are lifted. This means there is also no gap at the bottom of the door to contend with.

Whether you’re tired of the draught coming through your garage door because it’s old and faulty, or you’re simply looking to change the style and you’re considering thermal efficiency, Doormatic can help. With a range of roller garage doors and sectional garage doors from some of the world’s leading manufacturers, we can help customers in Surrey, Kent, Berkshire and the surrounding region — we’ll be with you at every step of the process for garage door replacements.
