When it comes to choosing the right garage door for you, your family and your home, there are many factors to consider. These factors may include material, design, colour and functionality. However, there is one extremely important factor that may fall under the term “functionality” and that is whether or not your garage door is automatic or manual.

And while we completely respect that each customer has their own tastes and preferences, whenever we are asked for our honest opinion on whether it’s best to choose an automatic garage door over a manual door, our answer is always the same and is always simple: YES!

Reason #1: Convenience
Yes, this is probably one of the most obvious and un-surprising reasons of them all. But what we’ve found over the years at Doormatic is that the “convenience factor” is quite often underestimated, especially when customers plan on having their garage doors fitted in the summer season, when the weather is generally pleasant and sunny (generally!). However, we all know that the winter- and sometimes spring and autumn time- can be brutally cold in the UK with its cold winds and heavy rain, and that’s when the convenience factor really comes in to play. Having to exit a car when it’s -9 degrees or chucking it down with rain outside just to close your garage door isn’t really anyone’s cup of tea….especially when you’re suited and booted for work and your neighbours are having a giggle with their automatic garage doors!
Reason #2: Security
As discussed above, manual doors can be extremely inconvenient, which leads to the higher and most common risk of people leaving their garage doors open; especially if they are just heading out for a couple for minutes to the shop to grab a bite to eat. Unfortunately, burglars are very much aware of this and will mostly target manual garage doors for this specific reason. It only takes a few seconds for a burglar to break in and steal your valuables and even access your house. Additionally, many homeowners with a manual garage door tend to forget to lock their garage door, which is too, a major security risk as it provides burglars a great path of least resistance.
Reason #3: Value
Even if you plan on living in your home for the foreseeable future, you can never predict the future or rule out the possibility of listing your home on the market. An automatic garage door can add significant value to your home, while having a manual garage door can in fact, have an opposite effect and devalue your home. Whats even more, some buyers may even put in a lower offer for the house due to the fact of considering to buy and install a new garage door as a costing factor.
Reason #4 Cost
So this reason is a little non-intuitive. Although provided that they are identical in all other ways such as the size, design, style, material and colour, an automatic garage door is always going to generally cost you more than a manual garage door – as expected. However, you need to think beyond this and consider that a quality garage door is designed to stand the test of time and last for decades; the cost of a garage door “per-day” is a matter of pennies. Additionally, when you keep in mind that an automatic garage door adds value to your home (reason number 3) , it may be even half a penny a day over its overall lifespan. Therefore, when seen like this, the cost factor really isn’t a negative, it’s a positive! Its profitable in the long run and therefore a great investment!
